On Feb. 18, Osceola Big Chief FFA members traveled to Creston where they competed against other schools in our sub-district in many different “Career Development Events.”
Career Development Events (CDEs) help students develop the abilities to think critically, communicate clearly and perform effectively in a competitive job market.
The conduct of meetings team consisted of the following:
President – Katie Carney
Vice President – Nick Allen
Secretary – Alyssa Luloff
Reporter – Gannon Hook
Treasurer – Gene Schneiders
Sentinel – Fulton Abraham
Advisor – Breana Lowry received a silver alternate to districts placing.
This team practiced together for two and a-half months learning different parliamentary laws and practicing their speaking parts. Even though they didn’t advance, they learned the importance of the process over the outcome.
Parliamentary procedure consisted of five team members: Kooper Brimm; Dusty Willke; Jake Manternach; Kaitlyn Boyer and Rachel Severns. This team also received a silver, and again learned more than 10 parliamentary laws and improved their public speaking skills during the journey.
Program of activities is a contest where two members and a projectionist share a 12-minute speech about the chapter’s activities.
The speech accompanies a slideshow, which is created by the team to show the past year’s accomplishments. The members of this team were Weston Brokaw, Keleah Selsor and Vanessa Bakley, and they received a silver.
Creed speaking is an individual contest where one member memorizes the FFA Creed and then recites it to the judges, followed by three impromptu questions. Alyssa Jackson was the greenhand who participated in this contest, and she received a gold.
Ag sales is another individual contest. It focuses on having a member create a sales presentation on an agricultural product and then pitch their sales presentation to the judges. Ashley Jackson was the chapter’s representative for this contest. She represented the chapter well, as she received a gold rating and advanced to districts. At district contest, which was held March 8 in Chariton, she again received a gold rating, but did not advance to state.
In early February, Kaitlyn Boyer interviewed with 22 other students for district officer positions.
Ten students were placed on the ballot and then asked to create a two-minute speech and prepare for questions. Boyer presented her speech on March 8 in front of the voting delegates for the south central district.
She spoke on her meaning of “Success – Farm Girl Style” and asked for their vote for the south central district reporter. Members shared her excitement as they announced her as one of the new district officers. The chapter is proud to have her representation as the new South Central District Reporter. The chapter is also proud to have Ashley Jackson running for a State FFA officer position. She will be completing the personal interviews in late April. State officers are officially announced during state convention held in Ames, April 28-29.
