Queener named DAR contest winner

Kirby Queener of Creston is the 2014 American History essay state Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) contest winner.

Queener read his essay at the April 12 meeting of the Nancy McKay Harsh chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. He was presented with a medal, certificate and monetary award.

Queener will be introduced and receive his state awards at the Iowa State DAR Conference April 26 in Ames. The topic of the essay was “The Lives of Children during the American Revolution” Kirby is homeschooled and in the eighth grade. His parents are Chad and Jennifer Queener.

Nathan Shervheim of Redding was the seventh grade Nancy McKay Harsh chapter winner, but was unable to be present.

Other state winners sponsored by the Nancy McKay Chapter were:

• Anna Shervheim of Redding, high school Christopher Columbus essay contest

• Megan Oswald of Murray, Iowa State Scholarship

• Christopher Hanson of Osceola, DAR Good Citizen contest

Their awards will also be presented at the DAR Conference in Ames.
