Dorothy Lewis Osceola

Dorothy Lewis, 88, of Osceola died July 11, 2014, at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 18, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St. The Rev. Dr. Al Adams will officiate. Interment will be in Van Wert Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Osceola Public Library or First Christian Church, 300 S. Main St., Osceola, IA 50213. Dorothy Mae Ritchardson Lewis, daughter of Annise Mae (MacMurtrey) and John Loren Ritchardson, was born Feb. 14, 1926, in Clarke County.

Dorothy received her education in rural Clarke County and at Osceola High School. She furthered her education at Simpson College and Drake University. She then taught school in rural Clarke County for many years.

On May 24, 1947, Dorothy married Reese Lewis.

Dorothy was a farmer's wife. Later in life, she was employed at Look Magazine and Communication Data Services (CDS) in Des Moines. She retired from CDS in 1991 as a clerical resolution manager.

Dorothy volunteered at Clarke Elementary reading program until her health wouldn’t allow it any longer.

Dorothy was a member of First Christian Church of Osceola, and volunteered as a teacher for Bible school and prayer groups. She was a volunteer member of the Osceola Housing Board and various other community projects.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Dale (Brenda) Lewis of Osceola and Richard (Denise) Lewis of Runnells; grandchildren, Ric and Eric Lewis of Osceola, Laci (Ryan) Williams of Adel, Nicole (Shayne) Short of Osceola, Amanda (Larry) Downey of Des Moines and Tiffany and Megan Lewis of Runnells; great-grandchildren, Layne and Jadi Short, Alexa and Alivia Williams; sister Ruby Clifton of Albuquerque, N.M., along with her children John, Susan, Denise and Jeff; great-nephew James (Jodi) Watson; niece-in-law Lynn Watson; sisters-in-law, Waunita Lewis of Osceola and Margaret Hall of Des Moines; as well as many other special nieces and nephews, family and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband; sisters, Annie Jones and Lavone Ritchardson in infancy; brother John Loren Ritchardson Jr. in infancy; brother-in-law Marshall Clifton; nephew Mark Clifton; nieces, Marsha and Marcia Clifton; nephews, Ron and Jim Watson; and many members of her husband’s family.
