Shiloh survivors meet

On April 6, 1906, Clarke and Lucas Counties Association of Shiloh Survivors met in Osceola to celebrate the 44th anniversary of the famous Civil War battle, which took place April 6-7, 1862.

Delegations from Chariton and Woodburn were met at the train station by Clarke County veterans, other members of the Grand Army of the Republic Post and citizens. Headed by the drum corps, they were escorted to the Arlington Cafe for dinner and entertainment.

The Methodist Episcopal Church was the scene of the pleasant and inspiring afternoon meeting held for the valiant boys in blue for the priceless service rendered the nation.

A banquet was served in the church parlors at 5 p.m. by the Women’s Relief Corp. A campfire at 6:30 p.m. with speeches, addresses, recitation and singing climaxed the occasion.

The photo of the Battle of Shiloh Survivors was taken on the east side of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The church, circa 1894, was torn down in the 1970s and the stained glass windows shown were purchased, donated to and are housed at Clarke County Historical Society Museum in Osceola.
