Clarke tennis teams stand at 3-3

The Clarke tennis teams each picked up close 5-4 victories over Davis County on April 21, improving the boys to 3-3 for the season and the girls to 3-2 for the season.

The Lady Indians then fell 8-1 to Centerville on Monday, dropping to 3-3 for the season.

Clarke’s girls team bolted to a 4-2 lead through the end of the singles play against Davis County and needed just one doubles victory to secure the team victory.

The team of sophomore Lexy Carson and freshman Brittany Beckett picked up an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles after Davis County won close matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, giving the Lady Indians the win.

Senior Dania Echeveste won 8-4 over Katelyn Herzberg at No. 2 singles, while Sydney Sickels and Carson each won by 8-3 scores at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Junior Katie VanGundy scored an 8-2 win over Kali Rudd at No. 5 singles for the Lady Indians.

In doubles play, the team of Sydnee Redman and Echeveste lost a close 9-7 match to Jordyn Thompson and Herzberg. At No. 2 doubles, Sofia Contreras and VanGundy lost 9-8 (7-2) to Callie Good and Bethany Bremer.

In boys action, Clarke and Davis County sat tied at 3-3 after singles play concluded. Clarke’s wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles gave the Indians the victory, however.

The No. 1 doubles team of Ali Aly and Reed Morris cruised to an 8-1 win over Dillon Garrett and Seth Mitchell.

At No. 3 doubles, Billy Otto and Terence Havlik scored an 8-4 win to clinch the Clarke victory.

Aly and Morris each won easily in singles play, as both picked up victories of 8-2. Havlik secured an 8-0 win at No. 6 singles.

The three singles defeats for the Indians were all close matches. Trevor Kirkpatrick fell 8-6 at No. 3 singles and Taylor Ehrhardt lost 8-5 at No. 4 singles. Otto dropped a competitive match at No. 5 singles, 9-8 (8-6).

The Clarke girls managed just one match victory against Centerville on Monday.

The No. 1 doubles team of Redman and Echeveste won 8-3 over Amory Glosser and Alex Kelly for Clarke’s lone win of the day.

The Clarke boys host Albia today at 4:15 p.m. and Creston on at 4:15 p.m. Friday. The Clarke girls travel to Creston Friday, with play beginning at 4:15 p.m.
