Bernice Curnes Osceola

Bernice Curnes, 99, of Osceola died June 14, 2015, at Clarke County Hospital Extended Care, where she resided after March 30, 2015, because of ill health.

Services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 18, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St. The Rev. Dr. Al Adams officiated. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola. Memorials may be directed to the family for memorials to be established at HCI Care Services of Osceola or Clarke County Hospital Auxiliary. Bernice Marie Chandler Curnes, daughter of Bert and Minnie Rebecca Schaffer Chandler, was born Nov. 10, 1915, in Washington Township, Clarke County.

After graduation from Osceola High School in 1933, she worked for the Agriculture Administration (AAA) as office assistant for Melvin Goeldner and Clarke County Farm Bureau.

On May 12, 1940, Bernice married Raymond Jr. Curnes at the First Christian Church parsonage in Osceola.

Bernice was a homemaker and a farm wife and helper.

After Jr.’s death, she moved into an apartment in town.

Bernice was a member of the First Christian Church, and was baptized along with Jr., David and Doyle on March 23, 1958. She had been a member of Clarke County Historical Society and a long time member of Groveland Helpers Club, and was a former member of Osceola Women’s Club. She was a volunteer at the gift shop at Clarke County Hospital and Sing Along at Osceola Leisure Manor.

Bernice is survived by her sons, David (Connie) and Doyle (Patricia); grandchildren, Terri (Mitch) Jones and Kelly (Jill) Curnes; great-grandchildren, Hanna (Tyler) Jeanes, Jack Jones, Molly (Kyle) Wilson and Mason and Marshall Curnes; niece Anita Chandler; great-nephews, Dan and Lee Chandler (Debbie Olsen); and several great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband on Jan. 30, 1980; granddaughter Brenda Renae Curnes in 2006; brother Glenn Chandler and sister-in-law Ruth; nephew Jack Chandler; and mother- and father-in-law Raymond M. and Grace Leeson Curnes.
