Clarke ends skid with win over CD

The Clarke baseball team ended its 11-game losing streak here Friday with a 7-6 win over Central Decatur.

The win improved the Indians to 5-17 for the season.

Clarke jumped to a 1-0 lead after one inning, before Central Decatur scored two runs in the top of the second.

The Cardinals eventually took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Clarke exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-4 lead.

After scoring a single run in the fifth inning, Central Decatur knotted the score at 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning, before Clarke answered with a walkoff win in the bottom of the seventh.

Zach Harmsen pitched the distance for Clarke, giving up just two hits. He issued eight walks in the contest, but struck out 10.

Sophomore second baseman Billy Otto drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for Clarke. He finished 3-for-4 with a stolen base and one RBI. Sophomore designated hitter Gabe Crawford hit a two-run double.

Dustan Van Loon was 2-4 with a double and one RBI. Reed Kale finished with a double and a stolen base. Gable Reece and Skylar Johnson each drove in one run for the Indians.

Ricky Marcus took the loss for Central Decatur, pitching two innings of relief and giving up one run on four hits, while striking out one. Dylan Gibson pitched three innings and gave up six runs on five hits with one strikeout and two walks. Keaton Minnick also pitched an inning for Central Decatur, which fell to 6-17 with the loss.

The win for Clarke came after suffering a doubleheader sweep to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on July 2.

Clarke lost games of 7-1 and 13-3 to the Rockets.

Reece took the loss in the 7-1 defeat, giving up seven hits and walking four with seven strikeouts.

The Indians managed three hits in the game, with Crawford, Kale and Reece each hitting a single. Gordon Witt scored the lone run for Clarke after drawing a walk and stealing a base.

Van Loon was charged with the loss in the 13-3 defeat, pitching 2 2/3 innings and giving up 12 runs on 11 hits with two walks. Trevor Kirkpatrick pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up one run on one hit.

Harmsen hit a two-run home run for Clarke in the first inning, while Reece drove in one run. Kale, Johnson and Conner Deutsch each finished with one hit in the loss.

Clarke finishes the regular season at home Thursday against Lamoni, before starting postseason play 5 p.m. Saturday in Stuart against Panorama.
