Shirley Eilene Marvin Akers Mount Ayr

Shirley Eilene Marvin Akers, 80, of Mount Ayr died Monday, Aug. 10, 2015, at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 15, at Trinity Christian Church west of Decatur. The Rev. Terry D. Roberts officiated. Burial was in the Decatur Cemetery in Decatur. Arrangements were through the Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni. A memorial fund has been established by the family.

Shirley Akers, daughter of Eva and Charles Marvin, Sr., was born Feb. 1, 1935, in Decatur County.

Shirley attended Osceola High School in Osceola. On March 21, 1953, Shirley married Doug Akers in Centerville. They were blessed with four children: Debbie, Ben, Sandy and Dan.

Shirley raised and sold AKC Chihuahua dogs. She also worked for more than 25 years at Central Decatur Schools as a cook. After retirement, Doug and Shirley ran The Wood Shop craft business. She was a member of Trinity Christian Church in Decatur.

Shirley is survived by her children, Debbie and Randy Dunn of Storm Lake, Sandy and David Higdon of Leon and Dan and Veronica Akers of Layton, Utah; sister Beverly McNaughton of Boone; brothers, Gene Marvin and Patty of Lewisville, Texas and Rich Marvin and Sharon of Osceola; sisters- in-law, JoAnn Marvin of Osceola, Bonnie Stuck of Grand River and Mary Klinkefus of Columbus, Ohio; brother-in-law, Dannie (Marilyn) Akers of Joplin, Mo.; grandchildren, Cherie Hunt and Brian of Escalon, Calif., Alex Dunn and Katie of Sandy, Utah, Kiley Schreck and Joel of Leon, Stephanie Akers of Layton, Utah, Clint Higdon and fiancé Kassy of Leon, Maggie Akers of San Francisco, Calif., Abigale Akers of Layton, Utah and Mark Akers of Weatherford, Texas; great-grandchildren, Addyson, Aubrey, and Axton Schreck, Aniston and Easton Hunt and Damon Dunn; cousin, Jerry Bright; close family friends, Gene and Sharon Casey and Tom and Shirley Conley; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Doug; son Ben; parents Eva and Charles Marvin, Sr.; brothers, Charles “Chick” (Mary Lou) Marvin, Jr. and LaVerne Marvin; sister Thelma Hill; infant brother Delbert Marvin; brother-in-law Glen McNaughton; parents-in-law, Otto and Frances Akers; and brothers-in-law, Harry (Betty) Coble, Charles Stuck, Robert (Margaret) Shields and Tom Klinkefus.
