August “John” Amick, 89, of Osceola, Iowa, passed to his heavenly home on Friday, February 3, 2012 in Rockledge, Florida.

August, or more affectionately known to his family as Papa Amick, was born September 30, 1922, in Mount Gilead, Ohio, the son of Willis and Eldora (Hercshner) Amick. He went to school in Mount Gilead, before joining the Civilian Conservation Corps (3 C’s). He enlisted in the Navy at the beginning of WW II, proudly serving on the U.S.S Nicholas, one of the most decorated naval destroyers of WW II.

August married the love of his life, Lelah Amanda Webster on February 12, 1946. Together, they set an example of marriage and family for 54 years until her death in 2005.

August’s greatest joy in life was visiting with family and his many friends. He always had a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye and an encouraging word for everyone. He never met a stranger.

August and his wife enjoyed traveling. They especially enjoyed traveling to Florida to visit their daughters and grandchildren. August was always on the go. He was particularly proud that he and his wife Lelah went back to school to complete their GED’s in their seventies.

August was preceded in death by his wife Lelah, his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Left to cherish his memory are daughter Kay Heckart of Rockledge, Florida, daughter Sandra Blanchard and husband Clifford of Rockledge, Florida, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

No arrangements are planned at this time. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
