Roadrunners roll to 10th straight win

The Interstate 35 softball team improved to 18-2 for the season, and in the process, has extended its winning streak to 10 games.

The Roadrunners picked up a quick 12-0 win in four innings over conference opponent Mount Ayr on Friday.

Senior shortstop Jenna Sandquist was a spark at the top of the batting order, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, one stolen base, one run scored and four runs batted in. Senior second baseman Brooke Brommel went 2-for-2 with a pair of extra base hits, hitting a double and a triple.

Designated player Brittany Mease went 2-for-3 and smacked a two-run home run for the Roadrunners. Freshman Slye Richards finished with two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Josie Wickett also hit a double, finishing with two hits.

"We hit the ball really well tonight," head coach Tim Bogs said. "I was telling them, their pitcher is not too bad. She changes speeds really well. We were patient and got some good swings. When we did get good swings, we hit the ball real hard."

Freshman third baseman Riley Morris drove in one run, as did freshman catcher Shai Major.

Freshman pitcher Carlyn Stanley allowed just one hit in the game to the first batter she faced, striking out nine and walking one.

"Carlyn pitched real well again tonight," Bogs said. "We're playing really well. Perfect time of the year."

South Hamilton tourney

The Roadrunners traveled to the South Hamilton Tournament on Saturday, where they picked up a 5-4 win over the hosts and a 19-0 win over Prairie Valley.

Stanley gave up four runs on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks in the win over South Hamilton.

Sandquist led the way for the offense, going 2-4 with a double and two RBI. Morris drove in one run on one hit. Wickett had one RBI on two hits, including a double.

Sandquist pitched a three-inning no-hitter in the 19-0 win over Prairie Valley. The senior issued five walks, but struck out nine.

Offensively, Sandquist went 2-2 at the plate with a triple, two runs scored and three RBI.

Sophomore Taylor Hartfield drove in three runs with one hit and two walks, while Richardson plated a pair of runs on one hit. Wickett and Morris each finished with two hits, while Morris drove in one run.

Bailey McCuddin, an 8th-grader who replaced Morris at shortstop when Bogs went to his subs, drove in a pair of runs on one hit.

Conference race

As of press time, Interstate 35 led the Pride of Iowa Conference by two games over Martensdale-St. Marys and Wayne with four games left to play.

Monday's contest against Martensdale-St. Marys was rained out and was scheduled to be made up on Wednesday, before the Roadrunners travel to Greenfield to take on Nodaway Valley.

The Roadrunners were also scheduled to play Wayne on Tuesday and finish the regular season at Pleasantville today.
