Mom Prom

OCMS, Eagles Lodge to put on special event geared toward mothers, sons

Don’t you wish you could say you took your mom to the prom? All jokes aside, now you can.

On Friday, May 6, Osceola Chamber/Main Street (OCMS) and Osceola Eagles Lodge are partnering to bring to the community the first ever “Mom Prom.” It will run from 6 to 9 p.m. at Osceola Eagles.

“You hear a lot about dads doing stuff with their little girls around Valentine’s Day, but people just don’t think about it around Mother’s Day — it doesn’t seem like. It seems to be more of a family event, which this is, too,” said Derek Lumsden, OCMS executive director.

Similar to Snowflake

The idea for the Mom Prom came from requests to do a “sister” event to Osceola’s Snowflake Ball. People wanted an opportunity to do an event that was geared toward mothers and sons. Thus, the idea for the Mom Prom was born.

The Mom Prom gives a chance for boys to give their mothers, aunts, grandmothers and godmothers a chance to dress up, go out on the town and dance the night away.

“It gives sons a way to showcase hanging out with their moms for awhile and doing something that both can enjoy,” Lumsden said.

Western theme

The prom will also have a “Western” theme, which differs a bit from the Snowflake Ball. This is a chance for people to get gussied up in their best cowboy boots and hats.

Fun events during the evening could include practice roping on “dummy” cattle and steers. There will also be dancing, snacks and a picture booth.

Tawny Waske will help to provide the music. Admission to the event is $5 per person. Commemorative photos will cost $2.

“If it takes off, this will be something we’ll try to incorporate every year,” Lumsden said.
