Local HCI volunteer honored during National Volunteer Appreciation Week

Organization seeks more volunteers like Jobst

National Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 23-29, a perfect time to say “thanks” to the 33 percent of Iowans who donate their time to make a difference. Iowa is ranked tenth in the nation among states with the highest volunteer rates, according to the most recent data available from the Corporation for National & Community Service. Local volunteer Mary Jobst is one of these individuals and was recognized last year for her contributions by the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Iowa.

“Mary is always willing to fill a volunteer need for one of our patients,” said Karen Irwin, local volunteer coordinator with HCI Hospice Care Services. “Whether it is providing a calm presence, reading a story or talking about gardening or fishing, she is always able to find some common ground between her and the patients she visits.”

As a volunteer with HCI Hospice Care Services, Jobst provides support, companionship and hope to those facing life-limiting illnesses. She is also an active community volunteer.

When did you begin volunteering for HCI Hospice Care Services, and what inspired you to volunteer?

I was looking for a volunteer opportunity and responded to an advertisement in the newspaper to become a volunteer with Middle River Hospice a couple years prior to when the organization joined HCI Hospice Care Services.

What do your regular volunteer activities consist of?

I visit hospice patients. We chat. I may read to them or just be with them. I participate in HCI Hospice Care Services’ veteran pinning ceremonies, honoring the veterans we serve as I am a veteran. I also serve in the 11th hour program offering patients and families a comforting presence during their final hours.

What do you enjoy most/find most rewarding?

Knowing that I have provided some service to my fellow neighbor.

How has HCI Hospice Care Services impacted your life?

HCI has provided me the opportunity to be of service to others.

What has been one of your favorite moments as a volunteer?

Reading humorous stories and jokes to one of my patients and hearing her laugh.

What advice would you give to someone who might be interested in becoming a hospice volunteer?

Try it out. Most likely you will find it very rewarding. If it isn't for you, that's okay. Try something else. There are all kinds of volunteer opportunities.

Do you volunteer for any other organizations?

I volunteer as a site leader and volunteer tax preparer during tax season for the IRS VITA Tax program sponsored locally by the Des Moines United Way. I also volunteer at Earlham community school in the fifth grade class tutoring kids. I deliver Meals on Wheels. I serve my church in several different capacities.

How long have you lived in your current community?

I was born in Dexter and attended Earlham schools from grades 2 to 12. After high school I became a registered nurse and served in the Army Nurse Corps for three years. I worked in clinical nursing in Des Moines for 15 years and then worked for 21 years in health insurance. I returned to live in the Earlham area when I married my husband Roy Jobst in 2001.
