Boyer family receives 2017 Way We Live Award

DES MOINES -- The Jason and Amy Boyer Family of Weldon will be recognized as one of six recipients of The Way We Live Award at the 2017 Iowa State Fair. The family will be honored in an award ceremony on Tuesday, August 15 at 11:30 a.m. on the Christensen Farm Stage in the Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center.

The Way We Live Award recognizes Iowa families for their hard work and love of farming. Each family exemplifies a dedication to animal agriculture and strong farm values. Each entrant was asked to submit a short essay describing how the occupation of farming and living on a farm has shaped their life. Six families were chosen out of forty-two entries from a variety of commodities and areas in Iowa.

In 1995 Jason Boyer, his wife Amy and 40 purebred Limousin cows moved from the east coast to Weldon, Iowa to escape urban sprawl. They purchased 140 acres of land and slowly worked to build up their operation. In 2001, the family purchased and restored a 1930’s hip-roof barn and opened the Harvest Barn Marketplace. The store started with fresh produce and country inspired gifts. Since then it has evolved into a seasonal business with a corn maze, pumpkin patch, fun farm, and many delicious food products. In 2008, the Family began to directly market their products at the Downtown Des Moines Farmer’s Market. The Boyer’s current farm operation consists of purebred Limousin bulls, purebred Limousin cows, feeder hogs and small flock of commercial club lambs. The farm also grows crops including corn, soybeans, pumpkins and alfalfa hay.

Jason and Amy have 3 children who are all active in the family business. Kaitlyn age 19, assists with the livestock chores and the marketing of seedstock as well as food products. Konrad age 13, has a strong interest in mechanics. He mows hay and assists with daily livestock chores. Kacey age 13, enjoys working with livestock and helps drive equipment. Jason and Amy stay busy with the cattle, harvesting crops and managing the store.

Jason and Amy along with their three children are thankful for the opportunity to work together as a family. They feel blessed to carry on the wonderful tradition of farming and raising purebred Limousin cattle in Iowa.

As a recipient of the Way We Live Award, the Boyer Family receives a prize package of $250, admission tickets, free parking, various coupons, a special recognition in the Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center on August 15 as well as video and photo recognition throughout the Fair. The Way We Live Award is sponsored by DuPont Pioneer and a media sponsor WHO NewsRadio 1040.
