DES MOINES — Interstate 35 wrestling coach Ryan Snyder headed into Wednesday’s State Dual Team Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena wanting to know if the hype was real about the Denver wrestling team.
“If they are what people say they are, we’ll find out,” Snyder said before state duals. “We are what people say we are and I think our record proves that. We’re solid from top to bottom.”
The Roadrunners fell in close 38-32 fashion to the Cyclones, who went on to lose to powerhouse Don Bosco 38-27 in the final.
I-35 proceeded to overwhelm Woodbury Central (52-21) and West Sioux (53-15) to take fifth in the state, proving all the more evident that I-35 reckoned with an incredibly tough Denver squad.
In the Denver dual, the Roadrunners seemed poised to grab control after five matches and a 12-8 lead.
But Brock Thompson at 220 pounds was defeated by Denver’s Trevor Dorn, who moved up from 195, by a second-period pin. Jake Hutton fell at 285 to Brock Harley by 3-1 sudden victory for a 17-12 Denver team lead.
The Cyclones had a decided advantage at several lower weights, benefiting from an open spot at 106 for I-35, and a Jacob Moore pin of I-35’s Tryston Palmer at 113 pounds in the first to push the score to 29-12.
Casey Baker (120), Zac Willey (138) and Ethan Eliott (145) all snagged victories, but the Roadrunners were already out of the team race with two matches to go.
Thompson bounced back from his loss in the Denver dual to win his next two matches (a fall and a major decision win) to end his sophomore season.
“Brock has been getting better all year,” Snyder said. “Brock is only a sophomore. We’ve got a couple more years and he’s steadily getting better.”
Jacob Steinlage (160) recorded three falls and Willey picked up three pins, two in the first period. Antonio Arzani (195) and Casey Baker (120) also won three times apiece.
Eliott, Drew Kirkpatrick (170), Brayden Egli (152) all won two matches each.
Egli, Brody Nelson (126), and Jake Hutton finished their Roadrunner careers in the duals. Eliott and Willey finished with wins to take seventh and third respectively in the Traditional tournament.
Nelson, who was injured in the fifth-place dual, was stretchered off as a precaution but x-rays and a CT scan did not turn up any serious injuries.
“All five of the seniors came up big in the postseason and in February,” Snyder said. “Three of them aren’t wrestling (in the traditional tournament), but what they did in the duals, you can’t ask for more.”
Snyder is even excited about what the duals could bring next year, even after a 25-2 dual season, with their lone losses coming to Class 3A Indianola and state runner-up, Denver.
