He worked a short time for the railroad, before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Korean War. During his service, he was united in marriage to Daleth Glenn on Dec. 26, 1951, and four children blessed this union. Active in Farm Bureau, he served as secretary and vice president. He was elected to the Farm Service Board of Humeston and served as the secretary until the plant closed. He was elected to the REC Board in 1992 and served for nine years.

Chuck farmed and raised Angus cows, and in 2001, he decided to retire and sold all his land except for 40 acres and his out buildings. Chuck enjoyed nature, being outdoors and bird watching. He loved to garden and give away produce to family, friends and neighbors. He enjoyed fishing, and his dogs went with him everywhere. Chuck had five antique Allis Chalmers to enjoy and take on tractor rides. He belonged to the American Legion David-Pence Post No. 69, helping with many honor guards at various services in the community.
