Gladys Sabin

Estherville

Gladys May Sabin was born on August 19,1930, to Arnold and Helen (Williams) Eisenhower in Estherville, Iowa. She departed this life for her Heavenly homeon Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SouthDakota, after a brief illness, at the age of 89.

She received her education and graduated from Estherville High School with the class of 1948. On November 27, 1949 shewas united in marriage to Eldon Sabin at First Christian Church. Gladys was a stay at home wife and mother, helping Eldon on the family farm. In the early 70’s they moved to Garden Grove, Iowa and farmed. She and Eldon owned and operated a meat locker in Montezuma,IA from 1976-1977, while continuing to farm. They returned to Estherville in1984. Gladys did in home daycare for several years.

She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Estherville, where she previously served as financial advisor, and often times volunteered in the kitchen for various church functions. For many years she and Eldon traveled with the Iowa Lakes Community College men’s basketball team. Gladys made homemade cookies and bars for the team for every bus trip. She enjoyed lending a helping hand and worked for Dinner Date for a number of years. Also, for many years she went to the nursing home every day and played cards with the residents, among other volunteer services, and in 2008, she was named Volunteer of the Year.

She remained in their home in the country for 10 years after Eldon passed away, moving to the Good Samaritan Apartmentsin the Fall of 2013. In her spare time, she enjoyed hanging out with her friend Roxie Stevens putting puzzles together, reading, and in warmer weather, sitting outside just enjoying nature. She also enjoyed opportunities to play card and board games with her grandchildren and playing with the great grandchildren.

Gladys is survived by son, Roger (Karen)Sabin of Estherville, Iowa; and daughter Nancy (Steve) Willke of Weldon, Iowa;daughter-in-law, Carla Sabin of Newton,Iowa; niece Judy (Ted) Lodden of Des Moines, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

She has been preceded in death by herparents Arnold and Helen Eisenhower; husband Eldon Sabin; sister Alice Springer; infant sister; sons Dennis Sabin and Gary Sabin; grandson Shawn Sabin; and great-grandson Xander Partelow.
