Eddie Dean West, 88, passed away peacefully at the family farm near Weldon, Iowa, on Nov. 25, 2020. He was surrounded by his family and friends throughout the day and lifted by the prayers of many. He is survived by his wife; Eula Mae (Keeler) West of 68 years, three sons: Kevin West of Lansing, Kansas; Geron West of Weldon, Iowa, and Mark (Theresa) West of Dodge City, Kansas. He was blessed with eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and always enjoyed spoiling them.
Eddie graduated from Swan High School in 1950. In October 1952, he joined the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War serving stateside. During his time of service, he met and married Eula Keeler and they settled in on the family farm at Weldon. Eventually he was called in to the ministry and pursued his education through Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee. They moved back to Iowa and began pastoring and fulfilled his ministry training. He was ordained an elder in the Church of the Nazarene while living in Washington, Iowa.
Eddie served as an ordained elder in the church of the Nazarene for more than 27 years. Eddie and Eula served faithfully in several communities in Washington, Monticello, Farmington, Shenandoah, Bettendorf and Estherville. While living in Estherville, their youngest son was tragically killed in an automobile accident in January of 1985. Following retirement from the Nazarene church, Ed and Eula moved to Olathe, Kansas, and lived there until 1995, when they moved back to Weldon to care for their parents. During this time, Eddie would preach at Weldon Christian Church, drive the school bus, volunteer with the Farm Bureau Association and served as the Clarke County weed commissioner for a time.
Eddie was compassionate, always able to see people in need and was willing to give what he had to help others. Many of you will remember him as being the man who brought chocolate candy to share. This was something that he loved to do and considered it an extension of his ministry and love for his neighbors. Along with the candy would be a note of encouragement or possibly the recipe for the candy he delivered as well as a scripture verse.
