Marjorie Faulkner

Rogers, MN

Marjorie Wood Faulkner, daughter of Fred & Dorothy Wood, was born December 30, 1937 and passed from this life Wednesday November 25, 2020 in home hospice with family in Rogers, Minnesota at 82 years of age.

Marjorie was born at home in Mallard, Iowa, where the doctor came to the home during a snowstorm. She grew up in northwest Iowa and graduated from Greenville-Rossi High School in 1955. Marjorie loved the sport of basketball from a very young age. During the summer she would practice almost every night and scrimmage with the neighborhood boys under the yard light. She was high scorer in her conference for three years and voted onto the all-conference team. She also participated in band, Glee Club, Mixed Chorus, declamatory and plays. She was very much involved in the church during high school as a pianist, Sunday and Vacation Bible School teacher, and active in the youth group.

Marjorie started college at Iowa State University to become a home economics teacher. She then decided her true passion was to teach younger children and transferred to the University of Northern Iowa where she earned a two year teaching certificate in 1958, which was the standard at that time. In 1968 she obtained a Bachelors’ degree from Drake University and went on to earn a Masters’ degree also from Drake in 1987. Schools she taught at include Hubbard, Urbandale and Osceola, Iowa.

Marjorie was active in many groups, but her most cherished was the National T.T.T. Society that is focused on providing a camping experience for girls who might not otherwise have a chance to go, to build confidence, make friends and help see the world in a different way. She was recognized by the Governor of Iowa for 50 years of service in T.T.T.

At UNI, she met her first husband Earl Duvall, a Navy veteran of the Korean War, also a teacher. They married in 1958. Three children were born into this marriage, Debra Dee, Steven Earl and Dixie Lee. She became widowed in 1973 when Earl succumbed to a heart attack. Marjorie married Max Faulkner in 1975, an Army veteran of the Korean War. They combined their children into one family, consisting of Brian & Perry Faulkner, Debra, Steven & Dixie Duvall, living in West Des Moines, Iowa at the time. The family moved to Osceola in 1979 and she began teaching a new federally funded program, Transitional First Grade, in 1980. The program lasted 22 years, which coincided with her retirement in 2002. She taught as a substitute for several years more. She was widowed a second time in 2019.

Marjorie was raised in the United Methodist church and God has always been an important part of her life. She always believed that God was looking after her and made a difference.
