On display now through August 11 upstairs at the Osceola Public Library can be found a variety of photographs courtesy of Lynnette Davis.
For Davis, her interest in photography began when she and her husband started traveling. She wanted to capture what they were seeing for memories, and find ways to take the best picture possible. Davis doesn’t just take pictures standing on land, though - she also takes them from the water in a tandem kayak, using watertight boxes strapped to the kayak to protect her equipment when not shooting.
Some of the photos on display at the library, which were taken throughout Iowa and the United States, are of wildlife - birds, eagles, raccoons and bison - some scenery - waterfall, sunset on a body of water - architecture, flowers and several photos of her ancestors who also shared her interest in photography.
It is hard for Davis to choose just one picture that she likes more than others. For some, it’s the subject matter that she likes. Others, it’s the way the light hits at just the right moment. The types of photos she most enjoys taking are those of wildlife, waterfalls, flowers and structures.
“For me, photography is about sharing nature and historical places, so that others will get out and enjoy them, too. We don’t want to take these things for granted, and remember how important it is to preserve them for future generations,” said Davis.
Born in Osceola and raised on farms outside of Woodburn, Davis lived in the area until 2004 when she moved to Altoona with her husband, where she lives and works today. She connected with Mary Ellen Kimball and the Clarke Area Arts Council after a friend on Facebook recommended her to them. With family still in the Osceola area, Davis is back regularly to visit.
