Buzzer beater wins Clarke the game

OSCEOLA -- A down to the wire shot by Brock Watson at last Tuesday’s home game against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (EBF) was enough to break the game’s tie that would have sent them into overtime, with the Indians winning 58-56.

Following back and forth scoring throughout the first half, the third quarter saw the Indians up by five points, thanks to a foul by EBF that sent Watson to the free throw line, and a three-point shot at the buzzer by Ryan Diehl to bump the score to 45-40. The fourth quarter followed a similar pattern in shots made, with a 54-54 tie coming at just under two minutes of play left. A two-point shot by Clarke’s Peyton Lynn bumped the Indians up to 56, a score that was quickly met by EBF’s Austin Langstraat, after being sent to the line on a foul by Nash Bishop.

The next approximately 80 seconds of tied play saw both teams stealing the ball from one another on their quest for the basket. Fouls and timeouts continued to stop the clock. With about 18 seconds left, a pass from in from Watson was stolen by EBF’s Teryn Bechtel, who drove the ball down the court and called for a time out. Back from the time out, a pass from Langstraat to Bechtel back to Langstraat had him travel the ball, turning it back over to Clarke with 5.4 seconds left in the game.

After a final timeout, Diehl passed the ball in to Lynn, who drove it down court. A long pass to Watson had him closing in on the basket in EBF Rocket coverage. A jump with a shot in the air, the ball fell through the net at the buzzer, sending the players and crowd alike into a frenzy as Watson’s buzzer-basket won the game.

Overall, Watson scored 22 points in the game. Diehl and Lynn had double-digit points as well, with 12 and 10. Watson totaled 14 rebounds - five offensive and nine defensive, Diehl five assists and Bishop five steals.
