Nellie Jayne Wright was the daughter of James Alexander and Winifred (Stubbs) Wright, born on July 19, 1927 at home. Nellie Jayne was the 13th and last child of the family. She passed away on February 4th near 2 AM at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines after a couple of falls in her home a couple of days earlier at the age of 95. The VA Hospital supplied a very nice service in her honor due to the time she served in our armed services.
After completing four years of high school, Nellie Jayne tested to become a teacher and served for a few years in the Woodburn area teaching in country schools.
Nellie Jayne entered the United States Marine Corps on September 24th of 1953, and served until September 24 of 1956. In the service, she worked in her station as an Air Wing and exited as a Sergeant. Some of her nieces and nephews thought she fit the position well, and continued to call her “Sarge” for a little humor. Nellie Jayne enjoyed talking to other marines she met throughout her life and hearing about their experiences.
Some of Nellie Jayne’s other positions in life were working in restaurants, working as a bookkeeper in a plumbing business in Missouri for many years, and caring for other family members when they needed help. She worked as a bookkeeper and sales person at Horton Floor Covering for a while till Linda could catch onto the system. She helped with several siblings when they took ill and needed help.
In the final years of her aging mother, Nellie Jayne lived and cared for her till her demise at the age of 98 years in January of 1988. She continued to live in the Woodburn and Osceola area for many years till finally she moved to an apartment in Humeston.
Those who passed on before Nellie Jayne were her mother and father, brothers and sisters Kenneth, Willard, Wayne, Clarence, Elaine Smith, Hazel Horton, David, Dorotha Horton, Eula Coble, Margaret Wright at 10 years, Mildred (Millie) Barger and Robert.
There are many nephews and nieces on down the line to remember Nellie Jayne and her music talents and good humor antics.
