Richard Palmer

Richard Palmer

Richard “Dick” Carrick Palmer, 84, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2025. A man known for his adventurous spirit, warm heart, and infectious smile; Dick lived life to its fullest until his final days.

Dick shared 43 remarkable years with his beloved wife, Sande, creating countless memories together through their worldwide travels. From the pristine beaches of Hawaii to the vibrant shores of the Caribbean, their partnership was marked by adventure, laughter, and unwavering devotion.

In his younger years, Dick was an avid thrill-seeker, finding joy in racing both cars and motorcycles as well as his adventurous nature that extended beneath the waves, as a passionate scuba diver. Those who knew Dick well would often find him with his signature Pepsi in hand and, occasionally, enjoying a Swisher Sweet cigar during moments of quiet reflection.

Dick had a particular fondness for casinos, especially in Las Vegas and throughout Iowa, where he enjoyed memorable times with Sande. He was known for his poker nights with friends, where his straight face and storytelling abilities made every gathering memorable. When playfully challenged about his casino visits, he would respond with his characteristic wit, “I took the casino’s money.”

A proud descendant of Nantucket ancestry, Dick delighted in sharing stories of his heritage, connecting past generations with present ones. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren, whose lives were enriched by his playful teasing and boundless love.

Dick is survived by his loving wife Sande; son David (Sandy) Palmer of Orlando, Florida; daughter Deborah (Douglas) Yanna of West Des Moines, Iowa; step-daughter Angel (David) Streebin of Elkhorn, Nebraska; and step-son Mike (Linda) Hopkins of Osceola, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents Elwood Wayne Palmer and Alice Aileen Blakely; two brothers, Donovan and Robert Palmer; and a step-son Bo Hopkins. His legacy lives on through his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Dick’s presence in our lives was a gift, and while he will be deeply missed, the memories of his laughter, love, and adventurous spirit will continue to bring joy to all who knew him. His life was a testament to finding pleasure in life’s simple moments and sharing that joy with others.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all those who have offered their support and condolences during this time.
