Thomas Lee “Tom” Meyer, peacefully passed away on February 5, 2025, in Osceola, Iowa, at the age of 79. Born on July 1, 1945, in Galesburg, Illinois, Tom’s life was a testament to dedication, love, and inspiration.
Tom pursued his education passionately, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Graceland College in Lamoni. It was during these formative years that he re-met the love of his life, Nancy Kaye Barnett. They had originally met at church camp in high school. Their shared commitment to education led them to begin student teaching at Clarke Community Schools in Osceola. On June 15, 1968, Tom and Nancy celebrated their union in marriage at Waterloo, Iowa, embarking on a journey together that would last a lifetime.
The couple dedicated over thirty-three years to nurturing young minds, both as esteemed educators at Clarke Community Schools. Together, they built a warm and loving home in Osceola, raising their three children: Tanya, Keri, and Chad. Tom’s passion for teaching was evident not just in the classroom but also on the wrestling mat, where he guided and inspired many as a coach.
Beyond his professional life, Tom served as a pastor at the Community of Christ Church in Osceola, where his leadership and kindness touched many hearts. He was a man of many interests, relishing the quiet serenity of fishing and hunting, the satisfaction of gardening and canning, and the joy of traveling. Yet, above all, he treasured spending time with his beloved family.
Tom was preceded in death by his father, Charles J.A. Meyer, his mother, Margaret May Meyer, his sister, Peggy Johnston, his sister, Cheryl Carlson, his brother-in-law, Phil Johnston, his father-in-law Clarence Barnett, his mother-in-law Helen Barnett, his brother-in-law Jerry Barnett and is his sister-in-law Mary Barnett.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by his devoted wife, Nancy Kaye Meyer of Osceola; his daughters, Tanya (Dan) Hardy of Osceola and Keri (Jeff) Crowley of Indianola; and his son, Chad (Lori) Meyer of Indianola. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Taylor Hardy McCormick, Parker Hardy, Ashlin Hardy, Emerald Crowley, Jackson Crowley, Cael Meyer, and Cole Meyer; great-granddaughter, Isla McCormick and his brothers, Charles Meyer and John Meyer as well as a host of other relatives and many dear friends.
A Memorial Visitation will be held at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola on Thursday, February 13, 2025, with the family welcoming friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date in the peaceful setting of Maple Hill Cemetery.
