According to an Osceola police report, the driver of a 2023 Freighlinter Semi was asleep in the bunk of his semi, when he was awoken to another semi hitting his unit. As he got out of the bunk, the other semi was leaving the parking lot and did not stop. No information on the other semi was obtained. A semi parked next to the one hit had a dash cam, but calls to the driver’s company to inquire about footage were not returned.
Damage is estimated at $2,000 to the 2023 Freightliner.

Two citations were issued following a traffic accident on July 13 at the intersection of Jeffreys Drive and Furnas Drive.
According to an Osceola police report, officers responded to a hit and run call. A witness to the accident had followed one of the cars that had left the scene and came to a stop in the Friendly Acres Trailer Park where officers made contact with the driver of a 2010 Ford Fusion, Alejandro Rocha Castaneda of Osceola. Rocha Castaneda admitted to causing the accident, but got scared as he was driving a friend’s car and didn’t want to get into trouble. Rocha Castaneda agreed to return to the scene with officers.
Back at the scene, it was determined that Rocha Castaneda was traveling north on Furnas Drive when he stopped at a stop sign. Traveling south at that time was a 2006 Nissan Maxima driven by Victor Ramirez Avina of Osceola; Ramirez Avina did not have a stop sign. Rocha Castaneda failed to yield as he made a left hand turn, running head-on into Ramirez Avina.
As Rocha Castaneda did not have insurance, he was cited for not having valid insurance in the situation of an accident and driving under suspension. He was also given a warning for failure to yield from a stop sign.
Damage is estimated at $5,000 to the 2010 Ford and $5,000 to the 2006 Nissan.

No citations were issued following an accident on July 12 along North Kossuth Street.
According to an Osceola police report, Jamie Miller, Osceola, was backing out of a driveway at 217 North Kossuth Street in a 2008 Ford Escape when she struck a 2020 Nissan Rogue that was parked in the 200 block of North Kossuth. Miller left, and arrived home home. There, she observed a scratch on her vehicle and returned to 217 North Kossuth Street. Miller did not realize she had hit the Nissan until she got home. Paint transfer on the Nissan matched Miller’s vehicle.
Damage is estimated at $500 to the 2008 Ford and $1,500 to the 2020 Nissan.

No citations were issued following a rollover on June 13 in the 2300 block of Kansas Street.
According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s Report, Josue Juarez Torres, Des Moines, was traveling westbound on Kansas Street in a 2007 Mazda Mazda3 when for an unknown reason started to enter the east/north ditch. The vehicle spun around facing the opposite direction, and rolled one time into the ditch. The Mazda came to rest on its top, and Juarez Torres was able to extract himself before emergency personnel arrived.
Upon investigation, the responding deputy noticed several open containers and drug paraphernalia located on the driver and inside the vehicle. Juarez Torres was seen by EMS and refused further treatment. He was then transported to the Clarke County Jail and an OWI investigation was conducted. Juarez Torres was found to be intoxicated and placed under arrest.
Damage is estimated at $6,000 to the 2007 Mazda.

No citations were issued following an accident along Highway 69 north on June 17.
According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s Report, Michael Tilley, Ankeny, was traveling north on Highway 69 in a 2002 GMC Sierra when he left the roadway, entering the ditch. Tilley struck and drove through a livestock fence before coming to rest in a pasture. Approximately 120 feet of fence was destroyed.
Damage is estimated at $5,000 to the 2002 GMC and $4,500 to the woven bard wire fence owned by Judy Romine of New Virginia.

No citations were issued following an accident on June 22 on 6th Street in Murray.
According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s Report, Moises Padilla Chavez, Murray, was attempting to start a 2000 Ford F150. When the Ford started, it began to move in reverse, crossing Sherman Street and striking a propane tank in a yard, knocking it off of its pads. The propane tank started to leak gas as the Ford re-cross Sherman Street to come to a rest in the ditch. The fire department arrived on the scene to spray the tank with water. EMS arrived to assess Padilla Chavez, but no transport was given.
Damage is estimated at $2,000 to the 2000 Ford and $500 to the propane tank owned by Tom Shannon.

No citations were issued following a two-vehicle accident on June 27 at the intersection of 180th Ave and McComb Street.
According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s Report, Kyle Robins, Murray, was travling westbound on McComb Street in a 2014 Ford F250 with passenger Drew Hiatt. As Robins approached 180th Ave, a 2022 Dodge Ram 150 driven by William Sumpter of Prole was southbound on 180th and attempted to turn east onto McComb, failing to yield the right of way to Robins. Robins was unable to stop or swerve to avoid the collision, broadsiding Sumpter.
Neither parties were transported from the scene. Damage is estimated at $20,000 to the 2014 Ford and $25,000 to the 2022 Dodge.

No citations were issued following an accident on the Interstate 35 southbound ramp at the 34 mile marker on June 30.
According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s Report, Gerilyn Fleming, Creston, was attempting to merge onto Interstate 35 in a 2013 Mazda CX9, behind a semi trailer that was also merging onto the interstate. Fleming attempted to pass the semi and merge directly into the inside southbound lane, cutting off a 2023 Freightliner Cascadia 126 driven by Andy Kelly of Duncanville, Texas. Kelly struck the left rear panel of Fleming’s vehicle with the right front fender of the tractor.
Both parties pulled to the shoulder and parked. A witness stopped and gave a written statement, and dash cam footage from Kelly’s tractor showed responding deputies what had happened.
Damage is estimated at $5,000 to the 2013 Mazda and $5,000 to the 2023 Freightliner.

No citations were issued following an accident on the Interstate 35 southbound near the 36 mile marker on July 4.
According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s Report, Angelica Hartley of Antioch, Illinois, was traveling south on Interstate 35 in a 2018 Honda Odyssey when she fell asleep at the wheel, leaving the roadway and striking the cable barrier. Both the driver’s side and passenger side curtain airbags were deployed. Hartley was transported to Clarke County Hospital.
Damage is estimated at $10,000 to the 2018 Honda and $5,000 to the cable barrier owned by the State of Iowa.

No citations were issued following a motorcycle v. animal accident in the 1300 block of Highway 69 north on July 15.
According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s Report, Joseph Cordaro of West Des Moines was traveling south on Highway 69 on a 2010 Harley when a deer appeared in the roadway. Cordaro was unable to avoid striking the deer, but managed to keep the motorcycle under control. Cordaro sustained an injury to his foot, and was transported via ambulance to the Clarke County Hospital. A passenger on the motorcycle was uninjured.
Damage is estimated at $1,000 to the 2010 Harley.

No citations were issued following an accident in the 1400 block of Truro Pavement on June 15.
According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s Report, a car in the ditch was reported. A deputy arrived at the scene and found no occupants to a 2007 Buick Lucerne. Darrell Stark of Osceola arrived, and told the deputy it was his daughter, Darian Stark, who had been driving. She had accidentally left the roadway when she looked down at the gauges and rolled the vehicle twice. Stark reported that Darian was now at home and okay. A private tow was arranged.
