GREENFIELD — Clarke wrestling came home with an individual champion and seven total medalists at the Coach Riley Invitational Saturday at Nodaway Valley High School.
Finishing atop the podium was Clarke 160-pounder KJ Fry, who went 4-0 on the day with three pins and a major decision.
Fry beat AHSTW’s Garrison Gettler in 5:07 for the tournament championship.
“KJ got into his offense. For him, he’s got a really good array of moves from his feet. It’s just a matter of pulling the trigger for him sometimes,” Clarke head coach Brian Reece said. “In the finals match, he didn’t really wrestle his style, but some of that is nerves and we have to learn to get over that. When you can win and still have things to work on, that’s the best of both worlds.”
Also medaling were Tyler Binning (220), who placed second; Cassius Henry (113) and Ethan Domina (126) who placed fourth; Kacey Boyer (152) who took fifth; and Alexander Shinn (132) and Jairus Davis (285) who both took sixth.
“We saw improvement from Thursday and a big thing for us is that we want to be better than the last time we took the mat,” Reece said. “Even from the first round to the last round, we beat some guys who had beaten us earlier in the tournament later on. Those are signs of growth that I like to see — guys taking instruction we’re giving them and making those improvements we want to see them make.”
